Keys to Organization!

February 7, 2019 - Michelle Murphy

Organization is always a challenge for everyone. Whether you like being organized or maybe prefer an organized chaos, keeping things functional for your lifestyle is key. Here are a few tips that I use to keep things tidy and easy to find.

  1. Accessibility: Being organized is great, but you need to organize for your own lifestyle. If things are neat and tidy, but double the amount of time it takes to get things done (ex: items out of reach, annoying to get to, etc), then are you really organizing efficiently? No. A tidy space isn’t the only part of organization. Your day to day routine needs to run smoothly too.
  2. Dedication: To have an organized space, you have to be willing to dedicate a bit of time and effort to making it functional and maintain that system. If you spend hours or even days organizing your linen closet, only to start throwing more junk in it the next time you are busy, you will never maintain that order and ease of use.
  3. Understanding: Do you know the best way to organize for your family’s lifestyle? Do you have the proper storage spaces, systems and fixtures? Research and understanding is a prior step that will only help you be successful in the long run.
  4. Less is more: De-cluttering and letting go is a huge part of organization. A home doesn’t have endless storage, so you need to have a life cycle for everything. The more you bring in, the more you need to get rid of. A great example is paper documents; they can be a tricky item to deal with because a lot of times it’s necessary to save them, but there is just so much. Some key things to think about are scanning documents that can be saved in electronic format (then discarding the physical copies) and keeping a well labeled, organized filing system to make it easy to find things as you need them (to keep the papers you really need to keep).
