Deer Run Community Centre Colour Consultation - Calgary, AB

Light and bright with fun colours bring this space to life! Gone with the dark, dim basement feel. The space is welcoming to all the Deer Run Community Centre members and guests.

DRCA Final.jpg

The paint colours selected for the basement of the centre are meant to liven up the space and make everyone feel welcome. The door colours are selected to offer wayfinding to guests, helping indicate which door is for which space. Doors meant for guests to enter into on their own are labeled with the room name or purpose to help everyone find their way.

This local community spot in Deer Run is looking great and ready for more people to join the great association! If you’re interested in checking out more about the DRCA or would like to become a member (great benefits!), please take a look here.

Keys to Organization!

Organization is always a challenge for everyone. Whether you like being organized or maybe prefer an organized chaos, keeping things functional for your lifestyle is key. Here are a few tips that I use to keep things tidy and easy to find.

  1. Accessibility: Being organized is great, but you need to organize for your own lifestyle. If things are neat and tidy, but double the amount of time it takes to get things done (ex: items out of reach, annoying to get to, etc), then are you really organizing efficiently? No. A tidy space isn’t the only part of organization. Your day to day routine needs to run smoothly too.

  2. Dedication: To have an organized space, you have to be willing to dedicate a bit of time and effort to making it functional and maintain that system. If you spend hours or even days organizing your linen closet, only to start throwing more junk in it the next time you are busy, you will never maintain that order and ease of use.

  3. Understanding: Do you know the best way to organize for your family’s lifestyle? Do you have the proper storage spaces, systems and fixtures? Research and understanding is a prior step that will only help you be successful in the long run.

  4. Less is more: De-cluttering and letting go is a huge part of organization. A home doesn’t have endless storage, so you need to have a life cycle for everything. The more you bring in, the more you need to get rid of. A great example is paper documents; they can be a tricky item to deal with because a lot of times it’s necessary to save them, but there is just so much. Some key things to think about are scanning documents that can be saved in electronic format (then discarding the physical copies) and keeping a well labeled, organized filing system to make it easy to find things as you need them (to keep the papers you really need to keep).

If you’re ready to get organized and stylized for your lifestyle, Michelle Murphy Interior Design is here to help. We can offer you organizational tips, tricks and solutions to make the best use out of your space. Contact us today!

Bright Geometric Bedroom

MMID recently completed a colour consultation in Massachusetts. The client is a student in her young twenties, looking for a fresh, modern design. Taking her inspiration, we selected the paint colours and tied the space together with some decor.

The geometric triangular wall design is the strong focal point in the room, anchoring the bed as the main furniture piece. Bright oranges and whites liven up the neutrals grey tones, bringing life to the space. The textural pillows and bold patterned rug compliment the soft, neutral furniture.

A fresh, modern space fit for a young woman ready to make a mark on this world!

The classic Eiffel Chairs pop against the warm wood tones in the table. Simple centerpiece accessories accent the table’s shape and scale.

The stunning modern sideboard is the showstopper of the room. High gloss white doors with a woodgrain waterfall surround pops against the dark contrasting floor and white bead board on the walls.

Designing Your Home Entry

The entry of a house is where guests will get the first impression of your home. Whether you have a grand two story foyer with 20’ ceilings or a casual compact area to enter the space, you want to make a great first impression and have everyone feel comfortable.

You should be proud of your home and the best way to do that is find pieces that speak to you. Bold statement pieces will leave a lasting impression on your guests. Cozy, casual, sentimental pieces will give everyone a comfortable, homey feel. Whatever your style, let your personality shine.

I love adding some florals or greenery to give a great level of texture, with that warm outdoor feel. Patterns are a great way to catch the eye and intrigue viewers as they enter your space.

Take a look at this entry space designed by Michelle Murphy Interior Design. Greenery, strong geometric angles and fun patterns keep this casual entry feeling inviting and alive. Warm wood tones give the space a cozy vibe. A simple console table with a few accent pieces and a piece of art catch the eye and finish the space.

Seasonal & Holiday Decor Styling

The fall season may be fleeting in Calgary, but a little cold weather doesn’t have to stop us from making our homes festive for the holidays!

Each season and holiday deserves a bit of attention when it comes to home décor. Even little touches here and there make the environment feel inviting to you and your guests. New décor and changes in décor give you a fresh perspective on your home, something new to see and experience.

Changing your décor often to flow with the seasons can seem like a daunting and expensive task. There are many ways to help you accomplish these transitions with little burden on you. From bargain store shopping and DIY to full service designers and stagers, there are options available for all lifestyles. Here are a few suggestions to get you started…

1.       For budget friendly options consider:

  • Bargain stores and flea markets: Look for alternatives to big box stores that may charge more for similar seasonal décor.

  • Do-It-Yourself: Make your seasonal/holiday décor! There are tons of free craft ideas online. Try Pinterest for some fun ideas.

  • Select multi-functional pieces: Pick furnishings that may work as décor for more than one holiday (eg: a simple, non-holiday candle holder that you swap out with different candles for each special holiday scent).

2.       For time saving options consider:

  • Select ready-made/store bought items: You don’t have to do anything other than put the items in your space.

  • Easy to install items: Décor such as figurines that don’t need to be hung on a wall or a ton of pieces to put together will make the process easier.

  • Hire a designer: There are lots of designers and stagers that can offer you assistance with selecting and installing seasonal/holiday décor. Michelle Murphy Interior Design offers seasonal/holiday décor styling to help you prepare for each time of year. Whether it’s for your own enjoyment or for a special occasion, MMID is here to help you make that transition.
